Marques de Alella
As far as I know there are no other wines exported to the US from the tiny wine region of Alella. This is it! Alella is just north of Barcelona, in fact I think the region might be with the city limits. It's unique because it is made entirely from the Xarello grape, a grape called Panza Blanca by the locals. Normally wines are a blend of Macabeo , Parellada and Xarello, but not Marques de Alella, it's just Xarello. I can see why they buck the local habits...their wine is so very good. It's very fragrant, dry and refreshing with lots of zippy green apple fruit flavors.
Esteva Douro
The Douro River Valley in Portugal is more known for all the wonderful fortified wines that are produced here. But there are more and more table wines appearing and this lovely red caught me by surprise. It's that classic blend of Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, grapes that they use to make Port, but this time it is crafted into a very elegant, complex table wine.
Quinta dos Grilos
Yet another Portuguese red that surprised me, but not because of the amount of quality for such an inexpensive wine, but for it's similarity to the wines of the Rhone Valley of France. It had the spice and depth of flavor of a well made Vaqueras or Gigondas, both prestigious village wines of the southern Rhone Valley. Nice as these Portuguese wines are, they rarely rise up to this quality level. Once again a blend of Touriga Nacional and Alfrochiero Preto that combine nicely to become a very tasty wine indeed.
